Chris Cardenas has spent most of his life preparing for moments under the bright lights of varsity basketball. Now a sophomore shooting guard for the Veterans Memorial High School Varsity Boys team, Cardenas is making his mark with confidence, athleticism, and a scorer’s mindset.

Wearing jersey No. 24, Cardenas plays the shooting guard position and is known for his ability to score, especially from the perimeter. “I knew I wanted to be a varsity basketball player because I was always good and athletic since I was a kid,” he said.

Cardenas has been playing basketball for 11 years, first inspired by watching the NBA. The game quickly became a passion, drawing him in with its skill and the freedom it gave him to showcase his shooting ability. That love for the sport is reflected in how seriously he approaches preparation.

“This summer I worked out, trained, and played in out-of-town tournaments,” Cardenas said. The offseason grind was all about growth, with the goal of helping the team reach its full potential. “Being the best we can be” is what motivates him most this season.

Wearing the Veterans Memorial jersey carries pride for Cardenas. “It’s about showcasing my school,” he said. His excitement for being part of the team is obvious, and he embraces both the responsibility and opportunity that come with varsity competition.

On the court, Cardenas describes himself as a downhill player and spot-up shooter. Shooting is the strongest part of his game, and he credits NBA guard Jalen Brunson as the biggest influence on his playing style. His favorite professional player is Jordan Poole, whom he also names as the greatest basketball player of all time.

Basketball has taught Cardenas the importance of self-accountability—taking responsibility for his effort, performance, and growth. Coaching advice has also stuck with him, especially the emphasis on being physical and always striving to be his best.

One of his most unforgettable moments came when he hit a half-court buzzer-beater, a shot that still stands out as a highlight of his basketball journey. As for rivalries, matchups against Los Fresnos (LF) carry extra intensity.

When he’s not on the court, Cardenas focuses on recovery, understanding the importance of taking care of his body. His advice to younger players hoping to make the team is simple: “Have fun.”

Off the court, Cardenas enjoys pizza, lists reading as his favorite school subject, and supports the University of Texas as his favorite college basketball team. Asked who he’d challenge in a one-on-one game, he didn’t hesitate. “Kevin Hart,” Cardenas said with confidence. “I’d win 21–0.”

With a shooter’s touch, strong work ethic, and confidence in his game, Chris Cardenas continues to grow into a key piece of the Veterans Memorial varsity basketball program.
