For Gael Garza, basketball isn’t just a sport—it’s a way of life.
A sophomore guard wearing jersey No. 1 for the Veterans Memorial Varsity Boys basketball team, Garza brings a fearless, disciplined approach to the court every time he suits up. Able to play both guard and forward, he prides himself on dedication, speed, and attacking the basket with confidence.
“I knew I wanted to be a varsity basketball player because basketball is all I breathe,” Garza said.
Garza’s journey with the game began early. He started playing basketball at just four years old, inspired by competition within his own family. “Not being better than my cousins motivated me,” he shared, a challenge that pushed him to work harder and stay committed to improvement.
Wearing the Veterans Memorial jersey is something Garza doesn’t take lightly. “It means a lot, representing my school,” he said. That pride shows in his work ethic. Over the summer, Garza trained every single day without breaks, preparing himself physically and mentally for the season ahead.
His biggest motivation this year is clear: winning district. And along the way, basketball has taught him one of his most important life lessons—discipline.
On the court, Garza describes his playing style as fearless and dedicated. Driving to the basket comes naturally to him, and he models much of his game after Stephon Castle. His favorite professional player is Kevin Durant, while he believes LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time.
Garza chose basketball over other sports because he saw the most potential in himself on the hardwood. When he’s not playing, he’s still immersed in the game—watching basketball or studying.
Coaching has played a major role in shaping his mindset. Advice that sticks with him includes never being selfish and always being strong—messages he carries both on and off the court.
One of his most memorable moments came during AAU play, when he hit a game-winning shot in a championship game. As for rivals, Los Fresnos stands out as the biggest challenge, especially in district matchups.
Garza’s jersey number, No. 1, holds personal meaning—it’s always stuck with him and connects to his birthday. His toughest practice came when he suffered an injury, but it only strengthened his resolve.
For younger players hoping to follow in his footsteps, Garza keeps his advice simple: “Stay consistent—you get what you give.”
Off the court, he enjoys a good steak, excels in math, and roots for Duke as his favorite college basketball team. And if given the chance to challenge a celebrity to a one-on-one game? “Adam Sandler,” Garza said with a smile. “It would be fun—and I’d win because of speed.”
With relentless work ethic, confidence, and a clear goal in mind, Gael Garza is poised to make a strong impact for Veterans Memorial this season—and beyond.
